Equal Adventure began with a desire to make sure that everybody is able to safely and meaningfully engage with the environment. It is important that everybody is offered the opportunity to engage with environmental issues so that we can look after our precious planet. Equal Adventure is also born from a connection with the environment and outdoor places, as well as creating opportunities to explore them, so sustainability and caring for the environment is one of our main missions.
Equal Adventure is made up of both a limited company and a charity. Both support the other, with limited company products ensuring the work we do as a charity is possible, and the charity community engagement in turn informs the design and manufacture of this equipment and training for practitioners. We deliver change programmes with individuals, communities and families to support inclusive, safe, and meaningful engagement with the outdoors. When accessibility needs are met, expeditions and fieldwork can become truly meaningful. In the charity, development has been focused on international expeditions with disabled people all around the world, and on creating a ‘new normal’; a mindset where it is possible for anybody with any functional requirement to be able to do any expedition or fieldwork, as long as they have the right equipment and team alongside them. We often feel our success is often when we are stepping point to something bigger. Equal Adventure is not the main event, nor the ‘story to tell’ of an expedition, but we have been able to give that person or organisation the tools to make it happen.
The limited company (EA Developments) objectives revolve around the provision of high quality equipment, and training and consultancy courses. The interdisciplinary team designs, develops, and sells 300 pieces of high quality equipment to support inclusion in the outdoors. We also offer training and consultancy courses for staff, outdoor professionals, carers, and support workers to be able to make inclusion come to life, and be embedded within standard practice. These courses consist of a range of modules to help people develop their own professional judgments around inclusive practice through a holistic approach. Taking a holistic approach allows both disabled and non-disabled people to be able to participate equally and in tandem with each other in safe and meaningful activity.
Inclusive fieldwork and expeditions are so important as it offers opportunities of risk taking, supporting active lifestyles, and increasing knowledge of our environment so that we can better preserve it. Equal Adventure is proud to be able to open up opportunities for anyone who wants to get involved in the outdoors in a safe and meaningful way.
